Making Robots
Over this year, I am hoping to make one product each month. One of these explorations will be fun robots from my sketchbooks—some in cardboard, some 3D printed.
I expect they will start talking and moving later this year.

Slitscan live using a time delay
https://dbgh.uk/slitscan/
The slit is taken from different positions in each of the frames. Tap the screen to switch between vertical and horizontal, and to change the FPS, slit width, and amount of buffered time.
I’m amazed this runs in a browser using WebGPU — all made without any coding in Codex and Claude Code.

Slitscan iPhone camera app
Made one morning at FWD Café in London with Codex.
This app takes a single vertical line of pixels from the camera and places them sequentially across the screen, building up an image over time. Objects are only visible when they move or the iPhone is moved.
There are many ways to explore slitscan photography. Some of my favourites are by former RCA Interaction Design students — Mark Hauenstein, Michael Golembewski, and Jussi Ängeslevä with Ross Cooper.

iPhone stop frame animation product.
Using QR code cutlery instead of a touchscreen.
The iPhone is positioned upside down, with an angled mirror allowing the front camera to look down. QR codes placed on pieces of cutlery are used to control the app: take a picture, play back the animation, move to the next or previous frame, delete, save, and share.
The app runs via a website, with onion-skinning and QR code recognition.
It feels satisfying not having to tap the screen.

Mobile experiments
Often made just out of curiosity.
When editing video, the bottom line lets me search the entire video, while the top line lets me select individual frames as I scroll. Moving up and down between the lines narrows or widens the search.
A small app that lets you look down at the screen while seeing horizontally, off-axis—using the top-right portion of the ultra-wide lens.
Why? My mother looked down into her Rolleiflex to take pictures horizontally. Barcode scanners point out of the top of mobile phones. Looking down while pointing the top of a mobile phone outward feels like a natural way to mix the physical and digital worlds.

MIDI Steel Drum
I’m hoping to make and share lots of quick, experimental designs this year. This is a MIDI steel drum I jusy designed — it took about three weeks, although I’m still pottering away with it.
I’m interested in exploring the aesthetics of the Bambu printer, learning how to make circuit boards, and even creating an iPhone app to help me at least tap out tunes.
Sadly, I haven’t played an instrument since the recorder at school. Still, it’s been really fascinating to make. Need to find somone to test it.

Masks
I started experimenting with a mask web app, originally made for a friend’s birthday. This led to an interest in adding authoring tools to make your own.
The QR codes lets you try the web app yourself. The second QR uses Roz Streeten’s vases from camdenclay.co.uk.

Face Tracking Experiment
Made this in an hour while putting together a talk for CSM MA Design for Industry 5.0. No coding — I just asked it to track a face.
Asking not coding is unbelievable. Cursor with the $20-a-month access.

SaySnap
An iPhone app that takes a photo when I say “Snap” through my AirPods. I like the idea of treating the AirPods as a remote control. It was made in one go. The nice thing is that if I don’t hear the shutter, I know the app hasn’t heard me say “Snap”. If I say “Start” and “Stop”, it switches to recording live video.
Another ClaudeCode iPhone app that takes pictures as quickly as possible while your finger is held down, then plays it forward and backward slowly. This was made on the beach at Seasalter.

Split Mirror Camera
Been doing lots of quick experiments with iPhone cameras. This was made without coding, just by asking Claude Code. It’s a Swift iPhone app, so sadly I’m not able to share it easily with you. This was filmed with people walking around at Fuse Masters

Sketchbooks
I draw all the time in Ryman A5 sketchbooks and have hundreds of them. For a while I shared some of the drawings on #durrell_doodles.
I also make 365 Christmas Cars, £1 each, for the annual Golden Lane Christmas Market.
